Finally, a reason to give "vegh" a well-deserved rest!
Klingon for the Galactic Traveller is finally available!
I just picked up a copy in the suburbs of Philadelphia this morning at the
bookstore, B. Dalton.
I know that this will provide months of facinating commentary on the list.
There are chapters on specialized vocabulary (tlhach mu'mey) that list new
words (and clarify old ones) pertaining to warfare, music, visual arts and
food. There are also chapters on idiom, slang, direct address, clipped
Klingon and a smattering of linguistic pearls hidden in chapters addressing
regional, generational and societal differences in speech.
A taste for those who may have to wait several more weeks before copies
become available locally:
Of the several words for warrior (SuvwI', mang and vaj) SuvwI' is used in
most circumstances and is never wrong. mang is used when the warrior under
discussion is described in terms of his membership in a fighting unit and is
often translated as soldier. vaj refers more to the notion of warriorhood or
the idea of being a warrior than it does to an individual warrior (e.g., vaj
toDuj, a warrior's courage).
Various devices are employed when it is necessary to talk about colors more
precisely. The suffix qu'- is useful as in Doqqu' (red) and SuDqu' (green).
wov and Hurgh may also modify colors as in SuD 'ej wov (yellow) or objects
may be compared to something else that typically has a particular color as in
Doq 'ej beqpuj rur ({it} is Doq and resembles beqpuj [an orange mineral]).
