Indeed.  There's no need for comparatives in one language necessarily to be
comparatives in another.  It sort of threw me at first when I came upon a
constructed language that didn't have true comparatives at all, but only a
few shades of "-qu'" (i.e. affixes that would make the modifier "to a mild
degree," "to a considerable degree," "to a great degree," "to an
extraordinary degree," etc).  And that's all there was, and all that was
needed.  In a sense, it's MORE descriptive than simply "than"; it gave a
whole set of grades to put things into (so you might be able to say that
Harry is prettier than Jack, but both are still fairly ugly).
