My notes indicate that Krankor used <reH> in this latter sense of "play a
musical instrument" at the first ILS Klingon Language Camp in August 1993
while teaching elementary Klingon to the campers. The entry in TKD is not
conclusive either way:
play (v) reH
play a game (v) Quj
Krankor probably reasoned that children playing together or with toys is
probably covered by <Quj>. <chut Quj> has been used confusingly in the KCD
novelization without translation (how is it used in the game itself?), and
Okrand facetiously translated "Cricket, please." as <DaH ghew yIQuj> for
the BBC Radio Times. <reH> has never been used in canon.
FWIW, one musical instrument <chuS'ugh> (whatever that is--Krankor used it
for the guitar used to accompany his Klingon songs at the Camp) is also
listed in TKD and some more musical vocabulary was revealed in HolQeD 2.4.
Significantly, Okrand didn't seem to feel then that a new word for "play an
instrument" or "perform music" (or <QoQ>) was needed--perhaps feeling he
had already covered this in TKD with <reH>.
I hope that Okrand's new book (tentatively titled "Klingon for the Galactic
Traveller") will provide the answer. Short of that, someone with an MSN
account could ask Okrand himself on his Klingon language BBS. <g> Bill
Willmerdinger reported that Okrand told him at BabelCon2 that he was going
to pay more attention to this forum in future.
