Several posts to this effect have gone by, and indeed it is sad (and maybe
a little off-topic, but I'm not going to jump onthat just yet). But more
to the point for us, nobody seems to be remembering that Mark Lenard was
also the first speaker of (proto-)tlhIngan Hol! In the first Star Trek
movie, Lenard played the Klingon captain at the beginning of the movie
(making him perhaps the only person to play a Vulcan (Sarek), a Klingon,
and a Romulan (the first Romulan commander we see as well, in the old
series)). There is an interview with him in HolQeD 4:3. In the first
movie, he was given a few lines of gibberish-Klingon to speak, invented by
James Doohan (yes, Scotty). When Okrand was engaged a few movies later to
invent tlhIngan Hol, he hoped to make it at least vaguely
backward-compatible with those lines. And indeed he mentioned that to
Mr. Lenard.... who proceeded to pull out of his pocket the phonetic
transcription he (Lenard) had made for his Klingon lines so many years
before! That's where we get "baH" for "fire!" (clipped, and in Lenard's
character's dialect it's pronounced "MaH", as mentioned in TKD). And a few
others.

Indeed, a sad day. For Klingonists in a special way.
