I'll leave grammar points to the BG, but an odd semantic point. It seems
to be a cultural thing, but to me, as an English-speaker from America,
there's some logical connectivity missing. I don't see how a system of
clans would be necessary to survive or would help one to do so, not without
some idea of the adversity that put them in danger in the first place.
It's interesting that this is almost certainly a cultural thing; another
culture may not have any need to have something so obvious spelled out ("My
business needs a 160MHz Pentium just to stay afloat!" That makes sense to
modern businessmen, but it's far from clear necessarily... what does
computing power have to do with running a business that makes shoes,
say?). Just something to ponder.
