RE: A.Appleyard using a betleH

A.Appleyard asked:
>Has anyone had a go at betlaH fencing in reality (with safely blunt edges
>and points!) and found whether they are as useful as scriptwriters and story
>writers make them out to be?
-----------------------------

I choreographed a two man set with betleHmey and performed it at KlinCon last
year with a woman from Splitting Image who was made up as Dax. We both
used aluminum betleHmey and the set was about a minute and a half long.

In the process of working out a number of sets for the betleH and practicing
applications, attacks, blocks, and counter attacks I've come to the conclusion
that the betleH is more usefull against weapons *other* than another betleH.
Two betleHmey tend to get 'tangled' too easily. Against a weapon like a long Chinese
spear the betleH is quite useful.

All in all, though, it would not be my weapon of choice. Sorry but some Hollywood
artsy fartsy type designed the betleH, not an experienced weapon maker and martial artist.
Try putting a real tempered edge on a betleH and you run into some annoying 'corner' problems.

The way Hollywood demonstrates its use can easily be countered with empty hand
techniques. Another poster was correct; all that "twirlling" is an invitation to disaster. Figure
8 moves are fine for coordination practice but way to predictable to be used in a fight.
Raising the weapon over your head for a down chop is also an invitation to have your weapon
taken from you.

I'm working on a sparring version of the betleH made with PVC and covered with foam insulation
and cloth similar to some of the sparring weapons used in martial arts tournaments.

Just so I don't elicite "this is for thlingonHol only" messages I'll repost a translation of a famous
Chinese martial arts proverb for those new to the list.

If anyone has a better way of stating it I'd be interested in hearing it.

Thanks,
