I have been informed by someone at the captioning agency that does the captions
for ST:DSN that they receive *written* scripts from which to prepare the
captions when doing Star Trek episodes. This would go a long way to explaining
consistent differences between captions and spoken lines (e.g., there was an
episode where the actors kept referring to a ship, I think it was a shuttle, by
one name and the captions referred to it by a very different name). Presumably,
the *phonetic* captions we see for spoken Klingon are the renderings given to
the actors, but that's just a guess.
