The situation did not improve. The commandant separated them. The corrupt
commandant forbid them to speak to each other. He thought that they could not
aid one another. But he was wrong. Because they were twins, their minds were
connected. They did not need to speak in order to communicate. They
continued to stay. The commandant tried everything. The commandant took the
young girls to a powerful river. He ordered them, "Enter the water." They
stood in water that reached their chins. They held their betleths above their
heads. The commandant threatened them, "Stay in the water the whole night or
I'm going to send you home." Malik stood on the dry ground to observe. This
experience was the worst. They were very frozen and their arms were tired.
Velqa thought, "I didn't get my face cut so I could go home." Pelora thought,
"If Velka stays in the river then I'm going to stay too." The commandant was
displeased when he found the sisters still in the river. They won again.
The year dragged on. Before becoming second year cadets, one rite needed to
be performed. There were cliffs nearby. The had to climb the cliffs by
themselves carrying all of their gear. Whoever returned first would be the
leader of the second year cadets. If they did not finished, they could not
return to the academy.
For two days Malik refused to let the sisters eat or sleep. Only if she
completed the ceremony, could Velqa have her revenge. She couldn't attack
him. In her dreams, she cut off his head. Pelora was exhausted and she
merely hoped she could go up the mountain. Velka quickly climbed the
mountain. Pelora climbed it slowly. Suddenly, Velka felt anxious and as she
turned to see Pelora fell. "Help me!" cried Pelora. Most heard her, but they
did not care. The cadets continued to climb the cliffs. Velka quickly
climbed down the cliffs, while calling, "I'm coming. Hold the edge." Pelora
who was tired and hungry was weak. Before Velka arrived, Pelora fell from the
cliff's edge. Velka saw Pelora's body lying in the dirt. Immediately, Velka
descended the mountain. When she reached Pelora's body, she performed the
death ritual alone. She picked up her body and gear and she and only she
carried it to the parade ground. Others wanted to help, but she wouldn't
permit it. Velka's superiors took the body away to bury it. As the body
disappeared, Velka stood alone on the parade ground and watched. Now Velka
cannot help Pelora. She picked up her gear. At twilight Velka returned to
the cliffs. She slowly ascended the deserted cliffs. Before she descends the
cliffs, she raised her head and cried out to the sky. Only her echo returned
to her. She wondered if Pelora could hear. She finished the rite. She was
the last.
