story, part 4

There was a natural division in the story that I thought would make this part
too long for correcting. You'll have to wait to see what Velka says in the
next installment. SuStel, thanks for all the time you've put in correcting my
work

DareS returned to his home and told his daughters, "I have taken care of
everything. We will go to the capitol tomorrow. Bring your betleths. Now
tonight forget about discipline and sit beside me. I will recite an ode of
respect about Emperor Kahless." While he was speaking they drew nearer
together. Outside it was cold, but inside it was warm. Pelora seemed happy
again. Velka was very quiet. When father was finished, Velka whispered, "I
love you, daddy." "I love you, dear daughters," replied their father.
"Tonight sleep in your room."

When morning came, their father said his last words to his daughters. "I
didn't think you were going to survive this year. Now I agree with what you
have chosen. Show the commandant what you know. If you attempt this task
bravely, I will be very pleased. Let's go."

Soon they arrived at the military academy. The sisters met the commandant.
The cadets stood in formation. "We will follow this procedure," the
commandant said. I will choose a cadet to begin the betleth fighting. He
looked at the two sisters. "Who is first." Velka entered the fighting
circle. "I, sir," she replied. Quickly the commandant hit Velka's face with
his fist. "Always address me as commandant. Do not forget it!" Velka was
stunned, therefore, she didn't move a muscle or speak. When her father
punished her, he only used an open hand. "When you answer me, we will begin
the fighting," the commandant said. Velka raised her head and forcefully
replied, "Yes, commandant."

The cadet that the commandant chose had studied betleth fighting for three
years. The commandant thought that Velka could not defeat this cadet. The
adversaries saluted each other. The cadet was very cocky and he thought that
he could put her down in one minute. "Begin fighting," ordered the
commandant. Their betleths met and their blades struck one another. The
cadet's sword struck hers over and over. She blocked with her blade to defend
herself. Velka's arms ached, but she was not ready to give up. She
remembered the pain in her cheek.

Suddenly an opportunity presented itself. Before the cadet could block her
betleth, she forcefully struck his leg and knocked him down. The cadet's
betleth fell from his hands. Quickly her betleth was at his throat. She said
to him, "Unconditional surrender." Because he could not reach his weapon and
his leg was broken, he had to agree. To Velka the commandant said, "I regret
that you have the victory." "Commandant," replied Velka bowing her head.
"Permission to speak." "Granted."
