lam "dirt" (probably the best)
yav "ground" vs. ghor "surface (of planet)"
>what about "air"?
muD "atmosphere, air; weather" (its meaning was expanded by Okrand in
HolQed 2.4, q.v.)

What is wrong with logh "space"? How is "empty space" different from
"(outer) space"? What is the Vedic definition of "aether"?
Cf. also: 'evnagh "subspace" (since no one really knows what this is, this
might be what you're looking for) and ngeHbej "cosmos", for a couple of
related terms.
