Invent your own language

Since you're interested in Klingon, I wanted to let you know about _Model
Languages_, a free on-line newsletter discussing the science of linguistics and
the art of model languages. As Star Trek has demonstrated, when creating a
science fiction universe it is useful to have an imaginary language -- a "model"
language -- in which to name places and characters, to translate proverbs and to
give the imagined universe added believability.

_Model Languages_ will introduce you to the basic principals that undergird real
languages and will show you how to create your own languages, whether of a few
words just for creating names or for a complete historic system. The purpose of
the newsletter is to teach you just enough about linguistics to be able to
create your own model languages, such as Klingon dialects, for instance,
specific to isolated outposts or planets. Linguistics is too often presented in
a dry manner, when it can be a source of enjoyment. _Model Languages_ aims to
evoke the playfulness of languages.

To subscribe, send a message with the text SUBSCRIBE MODEL LANGUAGES [your name]
in the subject header to [email protected].

why they're all learning Klingonese." - from _The Trouble With Tribbles_
