KLI resources FAQ -- v1.0

Klingon Language Institute resources on the internet - An FAQ
	** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **

This is a listing of pointers to various Klingon Language Institute
resources, and answers to some of the most frequently asked questions
on the tlhIngan-Hol (Klingon Language) mailing list.

Note that this posting is entirely about accessing various resources, and
not on the language itself -- You won't find a single word of Klingon
in this document.

Please distribute this document, unaltered, widely and freely.

				     *****

The 'main' resource that the KLI has is it's World Wide Web site,
available at URL:/. It is available to both text and
graphical users, the only condition being that you must use a World
Wide Web browser to get to it. On the WWW site you will find information
about the KLI, how to join, searchable indexes of mailing list archives,
and other fun things.

If you don't know if you have access to the WWW or not, ask the
administrator or help department of whatever online service you use
to access the internet.

For those who don't have access to the WWW, limited resources and complete
back issues of the tlhIngan-Hol mailing list are available via our FTP
site, ftp.kli.org. This site is also available via FSP, and we prefer
that you access it via FSP instead of FTP when possible. If you don't
know what FSP is, then don't worry about it.

Submissions to our FTP site may be placed in the /incoming directory on
the ftp.kli.org site. After you do this, you should mail [email protected] to
let them know what you've uploaded, and under what name.

For those who don't even have access to that, the entire FTP archive is
also available via "ftpmail". For more information on how this works,
send a message to [email protected], with a blank subject line and the
word "help" in the body.

				     *****

The tlhIngan-Hol (Klingon Language) mailing list is probably the most
powerful resource available via the KLI. Though not an official KLI project,
the tlhIngan-Hol mailing list is housed on the KLI.ORG machine, and is
frequented by many members of the KLI.

Please be aware that the tlhIngan-Hol list has VERY heavy traffic, and may
not be suitable for the faint of heart. Though putting the list in
"digest" mode does reduce spam considerably, the load is still very heavy.

Note also that the tlhIngan-Hol mailing list is a very serious mailing
list focusing on linguistic study. It is NOT a "trekkie" mailing list, or
any sort of joke. You have been warned

To subscribe to the tlhIngan-Hol mailing list, send a message to
[email protected]. LEAVE THE SUBJECT LINE BLANK, or put some arbitrary
subject on it (arbitrary == Something that couldn't possibly be confused
with a request to the server). In the body of a message, put the line:

	subscribe tlhIngan-Hol Your Name Here

If you want to get the list in "digest" format (that is, you get one or two
big messages a day, containing every message that's been posted, as opposed
to the individual list messages), add the following line to the bottom of
the above request, or submit it separately at another time:

	set tlhIngan-Hol mail digest

For help on various commands that you can send to the listserver, follow
the above instructions, except in the body put:

	help

To unsubscribe from the list, follow the above instructions, except in the
body put:

	unsubscribe tlhIngan-Hol

If you will be away from your account, and want to temporarily disable
messages from the list, without unsubscribing, use:

	set tlhIngan-Hol mail postpone

And, to start up the messages again:

	set tlhIngan-Hol mail ack

Note, that for all these requests, it is IMPORTANT that your subject line
not contain anything that the listserver could interpret as a command, as
the server will silently reject all such requests.

Do NOT post unsubscribe requests to the list itself, as they will be
completely ignored, even if the list owner does happen to see one (the
listowner only sporadically reads the list). Attempts to "spam" the list
with unsubscribe requests will result in the server software ignoring
all messages from your address.

If you have problems getting on or off the list, or have other questions,
the list owner's email address is: [email protected]

Messages to the list should be sent to: [email protected]
