KLI is now tax exempt!

Hello. Yes, I'm still WAY behind on the mailing list (and if people would
stop writing I might get caught up, but...) but that's not important right
now.

What IS important is a letter that just arrived from the Internal Revenue
Service, a response to the application filed last December by the KLI. And
the response is the long awaited YES for federal tax exempt status!

This is a good thing folks. It marks the KLI as more than just a fan
organization, more than just a corporation or a simple nonprofit. It doesn't
get any more legitimate than this.

A lot of people have worked hard on this, and I am very pleased we have
arrived here. It strengthens our position in the world of litigation over
Trek issues (and hasn't there been an increase in *that* in recent months!),
it makes us eligible for grants from private foundations (and I hope to begin
applying for some very soon), it means that we can receive contributions from
individuals and corporations and that those contributions are tax deductible
(just like giving to the college of your choice!) and it also means we're
eligible for a ruling on the nonprofit postal rate (and I'm heading down to
the P.O. on Monday to apply for it!).

I just wanted to share the good news with you. Congratulations to us all. We
deserve it.
