I haven't been keeping up with this thread as well as I should, but
how about this hypothesis:
vay' = Eng. 'someone' or 'something' / Fr. 'quelqu'un' ou 'quelque chose'
/ De. 'jemand' oder 'etwas' in any grammatical case.
-lu' = Eng 'one' / Fr. 'on' / De. 'man' nominative case only.
