Thank you for your letter of inquiry. Below I've included the text from our
basic information flier. While you won't get to look at the interesting
Klingon typefaces, it should answer most of your questions. Feel free to
contact me again, either through surface or elecontronic mail.

Now in its second year of operation, the Klingon Language Institute continues
its mission of bringing together individuals interested in the study of
Klingon linguistics and culture, and providing a forum for discussion and the
exchange of ideas. Our membership is diverse, including Star Trek fans with
curiosity and questions about Klingon language, RP gamers wishing to lend
some authenticity to a Klingon character, as well as students and
professionals in the fields of linguistics, philology, computer science, and
psychology who see the Klingon language as a useful metaphor in the classroom
or simply wish to mix vocation with avocation. Though based in the USA, the
Institute is actually an international endeavor, presently reaching thirteen
countries on six continents.

If you're just getting started with the Klingon language the place to begin
is with Marc Okrand's The Klingon Dictionary published by Pocket Books. Dr.
Okrand invented the language for Paramount Studios and has been a consultant
on several Star Trek films and for episodes of Star Trek: The Next
Generation. I also strongly encourage you to purchase a copy of
Conversational Klingon, an audio cassette (also by Marc Okrand, with
narration by Michael Dorn) which can help you learn the sounds of Klingon and
instruct you in some useful phrases. Your local bookstore should be able to
order both of these with little difficulty.

The main vehicle of the Klingon Language Institute is HolQeD, our quarterly
journal. Each issue includes artwork, feature articles, and regular columns
discussing Klingon linguistics, language, and culture. In addition, members'
letters discussing, commenting, and debating ideas and arguments raised in
previous issues also appear, supporting an atmosphere of mutual respect and
open discussion. More than simply a newsletter, HolQeD is intended to be an
academic journal, and is registered with the Library of Congress. Sample
copies and back issues of HolQeD are available for four dollars each in the
USA (five dollars for all other countries, to cover the added postage).

The KLI also encourages the use of Klingon orthographies and has developed
several computer fonts for this purpose for use with laser printers. A
sample of some of these typefaces can be seen at the top of this page. They
are available in PostScript Type I format for both PC and Macintosh
computers, as well as in True Type format for the Macintosh. Because the
Institute exists for purposes of education rather than profit, computer disks
containing these fonts are available for only $13.00 (including the cost of
the disk, shipping, and handling). Please specify computer and format when
ordering.

The Institute is pleased to be sponsoring a free eleven lesson postal course
to get you started in learning the Klingon language. Each lesson includes
helpful explanations of material covered in The Klingon Dictionary, builds
your vocabulary, and guides you through the creation of sentences and
phrases. There is no charge for this course, and you pay only for the
postage necessary to send each new lesson and your corrected exercises back
to you. To receive your first lesson send a self-addressed, stamped (with
sufficient postage for two ounces), legal-size envelope to: Klingon Language
Course, P.O. Box 37, Eagle, ID 83616.

Joining the Institute is simple; it is open to all individuals interested in
the study of the Klingon language. General membership in the KLI along with
a year's subscription to HolQeD costs $15 in the USA, $18 in Canada, and $21
for all other countries (payment in U.S. funds only). Institutional
subscriptions are slightly higher. All members receive a free copy of the
annual KLI Directory.
