PLUS I missed a footnote yesterday:
[254] I was thinking "gee that guy's communicator never shuts up" but he's nowhere near as bad as my boss. He's perpetually on the phone. You may have noticed that the Yelwitian ship has a switchboard communication style. People can't call communicator to communicator directly, but have to go through the QumpIn, or whichever hapless beq is manning that station. That explains why when he's with his girlfriend he doesn't get all the business-type calls. He only has to tell one person to hold his calls. He may not be strict with them about treating him with the deference Essim thought they should, but they got the message not to bother him with Essim unless it was urgent.
