RE: Compensating

Felix Malmenbeck ([email protected])

Good one, Voragh; love the hammer metaphor!

How about vIvutlu'[bej]meH 'utbe' QumwI' tIn HoSghajmo' mupwI'wIj.
[Because my hammer is powerful, a large communicator is not necessary for me to be [definitely] respected.]

For somebody who's compensating by navigating a large ship:

vutlu'[law']meH ghaH Duj mach poQ.
quv['eghmoH]meH Duj mach poQ ghaH.

One thing I like about the latter alternative is that one can interpret the -meH here as modifying either the sentence or the object, so either he demands a large ship because he wanted to be honored, or he demands a self-aggrandization ship which is large. A subtle difference, but one which may be fun to play with.
Actually, I think I'm gonna start using quv'eghmoHmeH X as a derogatory term.
toH quv'eghmoHmeH betleH DaSuqta''a'?
[So, you gotten a self-aggrandizing bat'leth?]

I'm thinking Qaq might be used here... ...but perhaps that term is a bit too serious for speaking of such things.

He might refer to his <ahem> "hammer" instead:
    HoSghajmo' mupwI'wIj, QumwI' mach vIlo'laH

Cf. KGT p. 129:
   "for a Klingon, a hammer is a symbol of power. The phrase {HoSghaj;
    mupwI' rur} ('powerful as a hammer') is based on this notion."
