I've never been to a qep'a' either, but I've attended some local (well,
German) qepHommey. They have a schoollike atmosphere, so although
something is learned, many jokes are made, fun is had. Translating parts
of Sesame street to Klingon, for instance. Or trying to make a verb and/or
noun sentence with all the pre- and suffixes possible.
A qep'a' is hard for me to attend, as I'm in Europe (and yes, I did miss
out on the one in Brussels, although that one was relatively close), but
I'll attend, and intend to organise, local qepHommey.
My advise to Shane: Try to find a qepHom around where you live, and attend.
Don't knock something until you try it first.
