Hm. This example only shows the abstract meaning "restraining from s.th.", not the literal "stepping 
back". Can it mean both? I need to know for my dictionary-translation.

French has the same use:
   {j'habite Paris.}
   "I inhabit Paris"

German too:
   {ich bewohne ein Haus}
   "I inhabit a house"
