Hi, sorry that I have not replied earlier. I am in Europe filming for the =
Digital Tipping Point.

Re publicity, I see no reason why the OOo Klingon project can=B4t be public=
ized. To the contrary, we are interested in publicity. But I personally a=
m interested in asking Klingonists to volunteer for the project under the a=
uspices of the Klingon Language Institute, for several reasons. First, Par=
amount might claim to have certain rights in certain aspects of its Star Tr=
ek franchise which overlap Klingon usage. Among those might be the word Kl=
ingon itself. I am very conservative when it comes to respecting IP rights=
, because those rights come with some very sharp teeth. I am concerned abo=
ut protecting OOo and anyone involved with the project from specious claims=
by Paramount. The KLI has negotiated rights with Paramount, and so I am h=
oping that we can support the KLI in its efforts to use OOo to enjoy their =
language study. Also, the KLI is a worthwhile association of linguists. T=
he KLI is not just about Klingon lore. Rather, it is an organization of li=
nguistic academics who are using Klingon to explore linguistic issues, and =
I think that this is a worthwhile endeavor.

So again, IMHO is a good thing for the KLI or members of the KLI to seek pu=
blicity for the OOo Klingon project, but it is really THEIR project.

Also, Klingon is a difficult language, and so that is another reason that i=
t only makes sense to let the KLI take the lead on that project.=20

So to the extent that we can help the KLI with support for its project, tha=
t is a great thing. Localization is a huge project, especially when it dea=
ls with a community like Klingonists who are spread out all over the world =
and have no place for easy face to face meetings as with a Terran language.=
So any help that anyone wants to give to the OOo Klingon project will be =
very much appreciated.

Thanks, and cheers!

Instead making decisions on limited knowledge, why don't you ask
Christian Einfeldt about the status? As to progress it is progressing
and you are invited to join the mailing list. Send an email to
[email protected] with a body of subscribe ooklingon.
