I'm not pagh, but as a former BG I think I can comment on this without
dishonoring myself too much. :)

The phrase "I must learn to..." can be expanded to "I must learn how to..."
or "I must learn the method for..." {betleH 'uchmeH mIw vIghojnIS} is how
I would phrase your idea. Perhaps {vI'uchmeH} is better if you want to
focus on your learning the procedure as a prerequisite for your holding it,
but I think {betleH 'uchmeH mIw} stands fine as a noun phrase which means
"the way to hold a betleH".

Stubbornness is appropriate when it's based on an interpretation of the
grammar that hasn't been contradicted. It's only a problem when it is
based on feelings of personal superiority. :-)

Qov is a special case. She started at the beginning like everyone else,
but she did it a decade before she found the rest of us. And she's just
so damned able to focus her entire being on a subject!

Do not set your goals "way way in the future." It's not unheard of for
someone to become BG after only a couple of years on the list. Part of
what makes someone a good candidate for the role is their readiness to
learn more. Teaching something is often the best way to learn it. :-)

Just as a side point, Holtej manages the *operation* of the mailing list.
He does not select Beginners' Grammarians or set list policy. But as a
skilled speaker, his opinions on both topics are of course important.
