The Control Data computers on which this system ran had 60-bit words.
Alphanumeric data was encoded six bits at a time, and ten characters
fit in each word.  Special characters indicated things like "the next
letter is uppercase" or "superscript" or "half-backspace".  It wasn't
like much of anything used today.  That was merely the storage format
for the characters; the transmission protocol was quite different, as
data was sent to the terminals in 3-character chunks and had framing
and error-check bits attached.  But I'm sure nobody cares about this.
