I think you won't get any argument here that it's probably abbreviated from
something longer. I should have been more precise and called it an "entrance
line". We thought that Qapla' was only an "exit line", a parting salutation.
Since in this scene they don't say anything else to each other, it's pretty
conclusive (that is, if you accept Paramount usage) that Qapla' is an
opening salutation as well, at least among warriors.
