Well, let's begin with the good news.
At present we have more than half the money needed to print Hamlet. These
monies came from advance sales and donations. This is a significant
amount because the book manufacturers require 50% up front. Now that we
have this (and a bit more) we can proceed with production once we have
the text ready.
On the down side, the simple truth is that in our desire to do this thing
right it's taking longer than we had originally anticipated. As I'm sure
you all realize, this will be the largest piece of text in Klingon to
date. As such, it has to hold up to a great deal of scrutiny. Nick
Nicholas, Andrew Strader, Mark Shoulson, Will Martin, and d'Armond Speers
have been doing a fantastic job, translating, editing, arguing, and
retranslating the entire play. I could not ask for a more thorough team
of translators and editors. This thoroughness has meant taking the extra
time to do the job right. To work out the idiosyncracies that can pop
into a translation, and to produce a work that Klingonists will be able
to read, not merely collect.
So, yes, we are running late. Later than I had originally hoped. I have
no doubt that this project will come to a successful conclusion, but it's
not going to happen tomorrow. I'd like to give you a new target date,
but at this stage I cannot be sure that I wouldn't have to move it
again, so I won't.
Basically then, any of who have prepaid for a copy of Hamlet, I still
have your names and addresses and am prepared to mail you a copy as soon
as they come off the presses. I thank you for your support and bid you
remain patient a while longer. If you cannot, then you need only contact
me via surface mail at the address listed below and I will refund your
money to you in full.
However, I would like to remind everyone that this *will* be published,
and when it does, there will only be one thousand copies of the first
edition. The first play of Shakespeare restored to Klingon. If you've
been to conventions you know what Trek paraphenalia sells for. Each of
these thousand copies will be worth far more than you purchased them for,
because of the limited number, because of the significance of its
publication. So, those of you who are pondering asking for a refund
(which as I indicated, I will provide) might wish to think again. Those
who aren't might want to purchase an extra copy.
And of course, you can watch this mailing list for new developments on
the project. I'll let you know when we have a firm target date. Believe
me, I want to hold a copy of the Klingon Hamlet in my hands as much as
any of you.
