Actually, this is part myth. A magnet will not erase a diskette
UNLESS YOU MOVE IT AROUND. It is not magnetism that writes to
diskettes. It is magnetic flux. That's why a refrigerator
magnet, while not a good idea to keep near diskettes, is still
less dangerous to the data than the back of your little
speakers on your multimedia PC, or the degaussing coil which
surrounds the monitor's front edge, or the ringer on your
telephone, or the fat electromagnets at the back of your
monitor...
Yes, you can erase a diskette with a refrigerator magnet, but
it might take a few tries before you lose data.
