[Tlhingan-hol] In search of a name

New Klingonists often ask how to say their names in Klingon. Today I
found this document buried deep in a directory where it shouldn't have
been. It was my worksheet when I was trying to decide on my own Klingon
name.

My Human name is Robyn, which supposedly means "shining bright with
fame". In 1996 (nine years after I first started studying Klingon!)
I wrote the following:
------
playing with the meaning
noylIjmo? wov - she shines on account of her fame (assuming I may
stretch the rules this once and noun a verb)
bochwI? - shining one
noywI? - famous one
wovwI? - bright one
wov - she is bright

playing with the sounds, and some interesting puns
ra?be? yIn - life does not command her
gho?be? yIn - life doesn?t step on her
ra? bel - pleasure commands her
ra? be? - the woman commands
wa? be? - one woman
wo? bang - empire?s beloved
wo? be? - woman of the empire

rejects
boch - she shines
ru?be? - she endures (i.e. she is not temporary)
noy - she is famous
ro?peng - torpedo fist
qabelqanqmoH - I am willing to please you
reH bel - she is always pleased
qab ?ang - she reveals a face
rebaH - we fire on y?all
ro? be? - woman of the fist
ra? min - the eye commands
rar min - the eye connects
ra? bang - love commands her
ro? bIng
rojbe? - she makes no peace
roj be? - woman of peace

interpretations
re- we--you
ra? - to order, command
rar - to connect
ral -to be violent
ro - trunk of body
roj - make peace, peace
roS - to lick
qab- to be bad
qab - face
lob - to obey
be? - woman
bong - accidentally
bang - loved one, love
bIng - area below
ben - years ago
mIn - eye
yIn - to live, life
yon - be satisfied
yong - to get in
?ong - to be sly, cunning
?ang -to show, to reveal
nong - be passionate
wo? - empire
ro? - fist
gho - circle
gho? - to step on
ru? - to be temporary
------
As you can see I looked at the meanings and sounds, and roughly
approximate sounds ("gh" is close to "r" in the mouth
of a French speaker, and it can sound a bit like q, too). In the end I
went with wovwI', and (most people know the rest of the story) later
changed the beginning to Q, so it matched the K- named Klingons John M
Ford wrote about, and then dropped the resultingly meaningless -wI'. Not
sure if resultingly has been a word before, but English is a secure
enough language that it won't hurt it for me to make up new
ones.
