You might be familiar with the games Myst and Riven from way back.

Myst, Riven and Myst III:Exile describe a multiverse where different worlds (called "ages") can be accessed through special books, called "link books." Open up a link book, palm of the hand on a page and you're transported there.

The background story for Myst concerned a fallen culture, the D'Ni, whose name is unfortunate to my ears as it sounds like "dunny," the Australian slang term for "toilet." A D'Ni called, IIRC, Atrus found himself on an island he'd created called Myst. He'd been in fear of his own tyrannical father Gehn, who had rediscovered the lost arts of the D'Ni and was using them to exploit ages to provide him with slaves and servitors.

Atrus, having hidden himself in Myst, was tricked into D'Ni without a working linking book by his own sons, Sirrus and Achenar, who'd trapped him by tearing out one page from Atrus' linking book and hiding it somewhere on the island. Myst was all about solving puzzles and recovering the page that allowed Atrus to leave his dunny prison and eliminate his own sons.

Riven and Exile are sequels, and Uru Online is probably an MMORPG carrying on from those games.
