My initial thought was that family terms is a subcategory of beings
capable of using language, and that group is already small enough that
if I want to find family terms, I can just look at beings capable of
using language. I'm now waffling over whether or not to add that
category.

The point is that these categories are simply to help me find words.
Often, because it has been a while since I went over the entire
vocabulary, I forget the words Okrand has included in the vocabulary,
and I get frustrated trying to look up synonyms that are not in the
list. If I can pull up a list of emotional words, or a list of
devices, or slang words, etc. then I can more speedily find the range
of available words.

If I go too far in classifying words, then it stops being useful.
Every time I think of another category, I have to sweep back through
the words I've already entered to try to find all the words that fit.
As the dictionary fills, these sweeps tend to become longer, so I tend
to sweep faster and get sloppier.

Also, I have to think about how often I'll seek words in each
category. I can easily remember immediate family words, like {be'nal,
be'nI', puqloD}, etc., and since I don't use words like "cousin" very
often, it is okay for me to have to spend a little time searching for
it on those rare events.

But if I want to tell a story or a joke or describe something I've
seen, having categories to present the vocabulary a few dozen or even
hundred words at a time in a particular category would really help me
find the words I don't already overuse.

Bento is a great tool for this sort of thing, since I can sort or
filter by any given category, and then type in a search and as I type,
records that don't fit the search disappear. Meanwhile, I'm realizing
that putting a lot of canon or "related words" into records can be
counterproductive because then all the entries showing a given word as
"related" won't disappear when I type in the word. Bento does not
search on a given field. It searches EVERYWHERE in the database.
