To type all that up in both klingon and english, it seems you're fluent or rather advanced, i hereby look up to you. lol Anyway, that is... quite intresting to find.. I guess it's all about not sticking out to be an american. Which is no surprise, considering there is alot of anti american feelings in the world, including in france.

I learned French at school for ten years, from two native speakers of the 
language, and "Mon nom est" was accepted by them. "Je m'appelle" is merely 
the idiom that is most frequent (but is overwhelmingly the one you find 
among native French speakers, who almost never use "mon nom est").
