That's true, but that's not a licence to go crazy with things.

No. In all languages, words behave in certain key ways that make them 
distinct from affixes. The past tense morpheme "-ed" in English, for 
instance, can never appear on its own in a sentence. Therefore, it's not a 
word. It can be part of a word, but never a whole, separate one.
