If you are looking at making a full-sized "wall" clock, you could use
electroluminescent strips to make the line segments, and, for simplicity,
switch them with reed-relays. A quick web search found these guys:

I've been considering building a travel clock/radio with a vacuum
flourescent or LED matrix display so I could do tlhIngan and Chinese
characters. The parts are readily available ... just haven't gotten
'round to it. Alternately, for the classy look you're after, you could
paint characters on an oscilloscope display, a la

IIRC, he also did a mini-clock with a 1-2 inch 'scope tube.
