The one whose courage comes from being fearless gets killed.
The one whose courage comes from being fearful stays alive.
Both kinds of bravery lead to benefit or harm.
If one of them Heaven detests, who knows the reason why?
Even the sage is unable to explain this.

The Tao of Heaven excels in overcoming without competing,
In responding without speaking,
In drawing to itself without beckoning,
In laying plans without hurrying.

Heaven's weapons are crude, its targets strewn wide
Yet when it takes an aim it won't miss the mark..


[A] {'oHDaq ghoSmoHchu'}: "It (i.e. the Tao of Heaven) perfectly causes to 
go towards itself". In this sentence the object of {ghoS} is unexpressed (as 
is the object of "draws" in English), the implication being that what is 
drawn or caused to {ghoS} is "things, anyone, everything, etc." The pronoun 
{'oH} carries the {-Daq} suffix because without it the sentence would mean 
something different, namely, "It causes it to go".

[B] The {-mey} suffix on {DoS}, whose plural form would normally be {ray'}, 
is supposed to convey the idea that the targets are "strewn", i.e. 
scattered.
