the other half is when X is a whole, and 'most' refers to a portion of X,
e.g., "most of the water is pure, but the rest is dirty". this is how i
think of 'family'; it's a group, a collective, rather than a collection of
individuals. thus 'most of his family IS'.
it DOES make a different what X is.
