An apostrophe (') is a full-fledged consonant in tlhIngan Hol. The
difference between {pu'} and {pu} in Klingon is similar to the difference
between "note" and "no" in English.

I'm not aware of a meaning for {pu}, but {pu'} is full of meanings.

The noun {pu'} means "phaser". [An apparent historically related use is
found in the noun {DaSpu'} "boot spike".]

The verb suffix {-pu'} indicates perfective aspect, specifying that the
action is (or was, or will be) complete. {jISop} "I eat", {jISoppu'} "I
have eaten."

The noun suffix {-pu'} indicates the plural of beings capable of speech.
{meb} "guest", {mebpu'} "guests".  [Plural suffixes are usually optional;
{meb} can also mean "guests" even without the suffix.]
