Re: Klingon WOTD: pogh (n)

: Klingon word:   pogh
: Part of Speech: noun
: Definition:     glove
:
: Additional Notes:
: KGT p. 58. A warrior's glove, also made of skin, had wide bands around the
: wrist and sharp protrusions at the knuckles. If there was a special name
: for these protrusions, it is lost; they are now called simply {DuQwI'mey}
: ("spikes"). The gloves did not have fingers. They were designed to protect
: the palm, back of the hand, and wrist, but not to interfere with the
mobility
: of a warrior's fingers. Modern gloves generally adhere to this design.

Though those vestigial (decorative?) leather knuckle-spikes on modern
gloves are called {DuQwI'mey}, there is also a weapon with much larger,
sharper spikes called a {DuQwI' pogh} "glavin, spike glove" (KGT). We saw
one in TNG "Code of Honor" which _The Star Trek Encyclopedia_ (1st ed.,
p.114) describes as

   A traditional weapon on planet Ligon II, used in ritual combat.
   Resembling a gauntlet-length oversized glove, the end of the
   glavin has a large, vicious hook and is covered with poison-
   tipped spines. Tasha Yar fought Yareena with glavins.

You can see a photo of part of one on the wall of Worf's quarters on the
Enterprise in TKW (p.204). A Ligonian spike glove {lIghon DuQwI' pogh} was
featured in KCD in Torghn's ceremonial room used for the {nentay}.

BTW, for those collecting puns or word-plays, notice that {pogh} is {ghop}
"hand" spelled backwards.
