I suspect that {Supghew} is Okrand's reference to a mandolin, 
which either comes in a couple "flat-back" styles, like the "A" 
style with the oval soundhole, which both Gibson and Martin make 
or the "F-hole" style Gibson is best known for, common to 
bluegrass players, or if it has a "lute-back" it is also called 
a "'tater bug" or "potato bug" mandolin. Potato soup, perhaps?
