Begginer's phrasebook.

Hello!
I am compiling a phrasebook and it is my intention of making these phrases
work in a conversation. Composed so that to every (or most) there are a few
phrases suitable as a reply. My intention is to boost convesation in a small
group by giving the someplace to start, quickly.
I also thought that these phrases should use different gramatical
constructions, so that there is a good base to start from for futher
studies.
Of course, the phrases are thought to be used in quite a limited setting,
namely socializing around a cup of tea, and a few episodes of Star Trek, and
eating at a restaurant.
Has anyone attempted something like this before? With what results?
