Daj Dochvam. We tend to assume that 0 is a prerequisite for a
positional numbering system, but that's obviously not the case. In
decimal, for instance, we could add a digit for "10" (say, borrow X from
the Romans): 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,X,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,1X,21, etc.
It means that multiplying by the positional base is no longer a simple
shift (12 x X = 11X), but it's still functional.
