This is because of the Romulan influence. The Klingons in Kirk's time may have had
some minute amount of Romulan DNA in thier systems, which by Star Trek: The Motion
Picture, was eventually filtered out so that their DNA returned to true Klingon DNA.
If I am wrong, I welcome comments.
