You are mistaken.
In the U.S., back issues are $4 each, whereas the four issue subscription that
is included in KLI membership is only $15.
Back issues to other countries are $5 each, due to the extra postage.
Membership to Canada is $18, and everywhere else is $21. So, I suppose you
might view non-Canadian foreign memberships as costing an extra dollar as
compared to just waiting to buy the back issues.
However, members also receive the annual membership directory, and often other
freebies as they become available (for example, this past year all members
received a complimentary copy of <jatmey>).
With respect to the "honor" component, well, you can take that perspective too,
I won't complain. Or you can view things from a more pragmatic/selfish point of
view: if there were no members, there wouldn't *be* a KLI at all.
Since I like to think of myself as a basically pragmatic/selfish individual, my
suspicion is that among educated and thinking populartions enlightened
self-interest will win out every time. ;)

P.S. HolQeD #18 came back from the printer today. I'm stuffing envelopes
tonight!
