By profession I am a technical type of person, but as part of my job I am an
instructor for my company in Job Control Language, SAS programming language,
Mainframe TSO, and occasionally Microsoft WORD. The first thing I tell my
class is that they should try to answer the questions -- take a risk -- and
more often than not they are surprised that they know the answer. My opinion
has always been that the only way to really learn is to learn from your
mistakes -- take a chance -- try it and if it goes wrong learn from it and
then try again. I have learned more from making mistakes and being corrected,
because it opens more input to the process than would have occurred if I
hadn't made the mistake. (You miss a lot of fun stuff on the Klingon CD ROM
game by not making the mistakes!!!)
I will throw Klingon sentences out to you all, but I will no doubt use more
English to ask for clarification and explicate my points. I have only
recently started on the list, but it seems to me that the focus of criticism
is to help learning and I need and want that very much.
I've been working in a vacuum for far too long and it only leads me to form
ideas and build on them that are just plain wrong. There is a lot of things
flying around and I would encourage everyone to try! Failure is inevitable if
you don't try.
