Here is the document I promised in my reply to Machiej (macheq) on
"foreign language pages on the KLI Web site". I don't recall where I got it,
but I copied it intact, and I can probably dig up a URL if anyone needs it.
After some introductory text, the list consists of lines like
<!ENTITY uuml CDATA "ü" -- small u, dieresis or umlaut mark -->
What you need to pay attention to in this example are
uuml
ü
small u, dieresis or umlaut mark
The last of these is a prose description of the character. The first is the
name of the "entity", and as you see is reasonably mnemonic. This is the
safest way to put a u-umlaut into HTML text.
BUT, yIqIm!!!:
You have to warn HTML that you're using this as the name of an entity,
or it will just show the four letters "uuml". The way you do this is by
putting an ampersand ("&") immediately before the entity name and a
semicolon (";") immediately after it, like this:
ü
No spaces! So to write the German word for 'five', you write
fünf
Awful to read in a word processor, but it works right in HTML. So write
your text anywhere and proofread with a browser.
[The second thing ("ü") refers to the position of the character in the
ISO Latin 1 Character Set. It is also (decimal) 252 in the Windows
character set. If you put that in your HTML text, it will look like u-umlaut in
normal Windows fonts, but maybe not in Macintosh, Unix, or others, so
DON'T USE IT.]
