Ah, that's the tricky thing about forming new compound words: sometimes
they make much more sense in hindsight.

TKD, Section 6.2.5 says "verbs of saying", like "say", "tell", "ask",
etc. don't use {'e'}.
Klingon uses direct speech to indicate what is being said, told, or
requested. When you want to say, "I request a phaser", you would say
something like:
{pu'HIch HInob jItlhob} (Literally: I ask, "Give me a phaser.")
If you wanted to say "I asked him where he was going." You would say:
nuqDaq DaghoS vItlhobta'. (Literally: I asked him, "Where are you going?"
