IIRC Christopher Plummer (General Chang) inserted a similar dramatic pause
in ST6:
Chang: narghta'? narghta'.
[They have] Escaped.
Grokh: qay'be'. Daq SovlaHbe'taH qIrq.
Kirk cannot know the location of the peace conference.
(It does not matter ... Kirk cannot know the location.) [novel]
Chang: DaSovbej'a'? bISuDrup'a'?
Are you sure? Will you take that chance?
(Are you sure? Are you willing to take that chance?) [novel]
Although it may have just been careful enunciation, Plummer's reading of
{bISuDrup...'a'? DaSovbej...'a'?} gave the line it a nice condescending
feel: "[So] You're sure of that, are you? You're [actually] willing to
take that chance, then?" implying 1) that he's not and 2) that his decision
is the only one that matters. Grokh, in fact, was able to read between the
lines. The very next exchange is:
Grokh: DeghwI'. <He chu'>. So'wI' yIchu'.
Helmsman, make course to intercept Enterprise.)
(Helmsman... New course! Engage cloaking device.) [novel]
Helm: qaH!
[Yes, sir!]
