I should have checked this first, but according to the "Puns in the 
Vocabulary of tlhIngan Hol" page, *Gan* is Old Chinese for "horizon".  See

Okrand has made at least one other Chinese pun - i.e. {lung} and, possibly, 
{chan}.

So, apparently no relationship with {ghang} "end prematurely".
