Celebrating a Shpiel-Good Holiday by Jane Ulman, Contributing Writer
SpongeBob SquarePants, a.k.a. Rabbi Lisa Edwards, at Beth Chayim Chadashim's
annual multi-cultural Megillah reading last year.
â??Ramvetlh QonglaHbeâ?? voDleH,â?? Beth Chayim Chadashim congregant Maggie Anton
Parkhurst will say as she begins Chapter 6 of the synagogueâ??s Megillah reading
on Erev Purim. What?
Itâ??s Klingon, the invented language of the â??Star Trekâ?? TV series and films,
for â??That night the emperor could not sleep.â?? And sheâ??ll continue, â??â??ej
ghaHvaD QonoS laDluâ?? â??eâ?? raâ??puâ??,â?? which translates to â??And he commanded that
someone read the log for him.â??
Reading the Megillah in esoteric tongues is part of the Purim fun at this Los
Angeles synagogue, and Parkhurst has chosen this infinitely tongue-tying
imaginary language of the Trekkies to make her bid at hilarity.
