As used in canon:

   botjan yIchu'
   Raise shields! KCD -

I'm pretty sure this refers to the device {jan} or shield generator, not
the energy fields themselves, which are called {HoSchem} "energy field" or
{Surchem} "force field". One activates a device {jan chu'} which generates
the protective shields, like one activates the cloaking device {So'wI'}.

Cf. also {begh botjan} "deflector shield(s)", i.e. the device {jan} vs. the
deflectors {begh} themselves (itself?).
