Yes, I think that's the main difference between "to desert" and "to 
defect". When I hear "defecting", I think of the "joining the enemy" or 
"switching sides" part, and when I hear "running away from your current 
duties" I think of "deserting".

Just make sure you don't get confused with the similar English words:

"desert" {Deb} - noun, a hot place with sand and cactii

"defect" {Duy'} - noun, an item that has been made with a problem or 
mistake, or the problem/mistake itself.
e.g., {Duy' ghaj pu'HIchvam - po Qap neH!} "This phaser pistol has a defect 
- it only works in the morning!"

"be defective" {Duy'} - verb, to have a problem or mistake
e.g. {Duy'law' pu'HIchvam - romuluSngan neH HoHlaH!} "This phaser pistol 
seems to be defective - it can only kill Romulans!"
