}NATURE OF THE EXAMINATION
}
}The accreditation examination is a three-hour, open-book, proctored
}exam in a specific language pair (i.e., one specific source language
}and one specific target language). The exam consists of five passages
}of no more than 275 words, one in each of the following categories:
}general, literary, legal or commercial, scientific or medical, and
}semi-technical. The candidate selects no more than three passages and
}must satisfactorily translate at least two.
}
}HOW THE EXAM IS GRADED
}
}Copies of the examination, identified only by code number, are sent to
}two graders. Each passage is marked "pass" or "fail." Candidates who
}receive a "pass" on at least two passages from both graders receive
}accreditation. In cases where graders disagree, a third grader is
}asked to grade the passages on which the graders disagreed. A
}translated passage is marked "fail" if it includes two or more major
}errors, one major and more than six minor errors, or no major errors
}and twenty or more minor errors.
