Good question. We have no evidence of "'ar" for verbal modification; it
may already be one of the questions on Okrand's desk. I know we've asked
several things about 'ar.
You can probably come up with some fairly creative ones. Your use of
"chay'" is clever and actually works pretty well for me. For "how fast
does the ship travel" you can say "nuq 'oH Duj Do?" You might try
something like "qelI'qam 'ar ngaS bIQtIq" for "how long is the river", tho
"ngaS" really doesn't work. I'm rather fond of "qelI'qam 'ar tIq bIQtIq",
using "tIq" transitively with the measurement as the object (Esperanto does
this), but I would NOT recommend it. It's simply too ad hoc and
unattested, and is probably an Esperantism on my part.
